New 550 hp soft-roader rubs us the wrong way, will sell like hotcakes

Mercedes is going down the road to niche with the latest offering from the North American International Auto Show. While looking at the BMW X6 M, the powers that be at Mercedes-AMG said, “Ja, ve vill do zat, too.”

Powered by a 5.5L biturbo V8 engine, the newest addition to the AMG lineup will produce 550 hp in normal guise. Splurge for the GLE 63S and you’ll be welcomed by over 575 hp. They produce 516 and 560 lb-ft of torque respectively.

While prices weren’t released, expect this new AMG to be in the six-figure territory. Yeah, that’s a lot of dough for a sedan-coupe-softroader, but Mercedes will likely sell them easily enough.
