When Volkswagen announced the new Golf R coming to North America would be a detuned version of that found in Europe, there was a collective moan amongst those who cherish the hot hatch. However, at the Beijing Auto Show, Volkswagen is redeeming themselves. Hopefully.

Powered by the same EA888 as the Golf R, Volkswagen engineers have strengthened some internal bits to handle more boost. The product? The Golf R400 you see above with 395 hp from a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, good for a sprint to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 280 km/h.

Also, if you were wondering, that power output is 105 hp more than the now much more plebeian Golf R.

Better yet, Car&Driver has confirmed Volkswagen will produce the R400, though it’s availability has yet to be announced.

Cross your peace fingers, fanboys. You might be in for quite a ride very soon.
