Motorbooks International recently released the second edition of its popular Jeep 4×4 Performance Handbook in an effort to keep it up-to-date. Renowned Jeep expert Jim Allen has done most of the legwork and heavy lifting for you and bundled it together in this well-organized tome, helping to take the guesswork out of some of the most popular modifications sought by owners wanting to improve the look, performance and durability of their Jeep vehicles.
The book is comprised of twelve colour-coded chapters that each focus on a key aspect of the mechanical workings of the typical Jeep vehicle. As many Jeeps will be faced with stresses that far exceed those of a standard automobile, this book highlights which components and systems will need to be beefed up or modified to meet the demands of off-road duty. Allen offers a wealth of knowledge in an easy-to-read, well researched book complete with helpful photos, diagrams and glossaries to help the do-it-yourselfer plan his or her next upgrade or project.
Wheels and Tires
Ask any car guy how to make a car handle better and most of the time he will tell you that selecting the proper wheel and tire combination will offer quick results. This is especially true when it comes to off-road vehicles, where options are seemingly endless due to the variety of terrain and trail conditions one might encounter. An entire chapter focuses on the different types and sizes of tires and wheels available to the Jeep owner, but more importantly it clues the reader in to other considerations that have to be made if you choose to go with bigger boots, such as fender clearance, gearing and speedometer correction.
