For 2005, the Maserati Coupe and Spyder receive very minor bumper changes and new interior trim. There’s also a new Coupe GranSport model, with more horsepower, a lowered suspension, unique spoilers and larger Brembo brakes.
The Coupe is available as the GT, the Cambiocorsa, and the GranSport; the Spyder convertible comes as the GT and Cambiocorsa. All are powered by a 4.2-litre V8, sourced from parent company Ferrari, that makes 385 hp in the GT and Cambiocorsa, and 396 hp in the GranSport. That’s enough to take the GT from zero to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, on its way to a maximum speed of 285 km/h.
Among the GT’s features are leather interior, Brembo brakes with four-piston callipers, analogue instrumentation, a 5.8-inch colour information display, single CD stereo, and climate control centre. Available options include a navigation system, CD changer, telephone module, and made-to-measure luggage. The Cambiocorsa adds an F1-style automatic shifter and clutch, with column-mounted paddles, and a choice of Normal, Sport, Auto and Low Grip operating modes.
The Spyder is 220 mm shorter than the Coupe and features a power roof, two fixed roll bars and 18-inch seven-spoke wheels.
Beautifully designed, the Maserati Coupe is the least expensive way to put a Ferrari engine in your driveway. Firm enough to handle the tightest roads, but with sophistication and smoothness, all models are excellent road cars. The extra horses and hunkered-down architecture on the GranSport doesn’t go unnoticed, either. The interior is a fine mix of new-world technology and old-world attention to detail; in a nutshell, these are lovely cars.
