Starting with the 500-grit pad, you hold the drill flat or at a slight angle to control the tool and generate a smooth and even sanding motion. Once all defects are gone, switch to the 800-grit pad, using a slow and steady back and forth motion, and being careful not to hold the drill in one place (doing so will generate heat and smear the surface of the lens). By this time, all shine and transparency has gone from the lens, but don’t worry!

Next use the 3000-grit pad and spray the lens and pad with water; a white slurry builds up on the lens indicating that you are reducing the sanding scratches. Continue with four to six more passes after the slurry begins to appear. Wipe down the lens and if any coarse scratches still appear continue with the 3000-grit pad.

Next place a dime sized amount of the polishing compound on the buffing pad. To reduce splatter, work the compound into the pad before turning on the drill. Hold the pad flat against the lens and polish until the cloudy haze is gone, adding more polish as required. Finally wipe down the lens.

As a final treatment I used some plastic polish.

The results were amazing. All traces of haze were completely gone and the lenses look like new again. This product does everything it claims and at a fraction of the cost of replacing the lens. The job took about 30 minutes.

3M suggests that an occasional application of 3M Plastic Cleaner and 3M Plastic Polish will maintain the clarity of the headlight lens over time.

The 3M Headlight Restoration Kit is available at most auto parts stores.
