Corvette assembly workers vote 93 percent in favour of strike authorization
Safety and quality control positions are of contention between the UAW and management of GM’s Bowling Green assembly plant, which produces the Chevrolet Corvette.
Speaking with media, Eldon Renaud, president of Local 2164 said the union is strike shy but thinks the vote will get the immediate attention of managers at the plant. “Near misses” where workers could have been seriously hurt and the elimination of some quality control workers prompted the move.
However, in order to strike, the local needs to ask for authorization from regional and national levels of the organization, so the vote may go nowhere.
In other union news, Unifor is attempting to unionize workers of Toyota’s facilities in Canada, but there’s been a delay in the vote. A vote was set for this week but Unifor found more employees who are eligible to vote, this delaying the vote. Rumours put the number of employees eligible at 7,500 while 3,500 have already signed union cards.
While Toyota says they’ve never laid off permanent employees in Canada, Unifor claims a quarter of Toyotas workforce works under temporary contract with lower benefits.
