Windsor, Ontario – The City of Windsor in Ontario is moving ahead with plans to purchase 18 new hybrid transit buses built by New Flyer Industries in Winnipeg, Manitoba, according to the Canadian Auto Workers Union (CAW).

“Not only is Transit Windsor making significant improvements to transit service, they are also making substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, and protecting good Canadian manufacturing jobs,” said Ken Lewenza Jr., of CAW Local 444 at New Flyer Industries.

Each hybrid bus uses approximately $8,000 to $10,000 less in fuel each year than a regular diesel bus. Once the buses are delivered in May 2009, 18 per cent of Windsor’s bus fleet will have shifted to hybrid.
