Paris, France – Volkswagen’s chairman of the board of management, Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, has been named “Man of the Year 2008” by France’s most eminent media. He is the second German manager to receive the award in its 27-year history.

In the opinion of the award’s jury, organized by Le Journal de l’Automobile, the Volkswagen Group under Winterkorn’s management was “the only automaker to buck the economic crisis.”

“He (Winterkorn) has devoted himself to engineering prowess and technology, has shown an uncompromising focus on quality, and together with his team, has the perfect, far-sighted management style,” said racing driver Jacky Ickx in his laudation address.

In 2008, Volkswagen met its targets of unit sales, sales revenue and profit, and broke records in spite of dramatically tougher conditions, with sales revenue growing by 4.5 per cent and unit sales of 6.3 million vehicles.
