Volvo to offer flexible fuel E85 engines in Europe

Goteborg, Sweden – Volvo has announced that it will introduce a 2.5-litre, five-cylinder turbocharged Flexifuel engine in the V70 and S80 in the first half of 2008. Both models will also be available with a 2.0-litre Flexifuel engine. In all, five models – the C30, S40, V50, V70 and S80 – will be available with one or two Flexifuel engines.

“Flexifuel has considerable potential in larger models too,” says Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President, Business and Product Strategy. “This is why we plan to continuously expand the implantation of this technology over the coming years. It’s a move that is being driven by the extended availability of biofuels throughout Europe. Biofuel standardization and guidelines for sustainable production within the EU would make the fuel’s development even smoother.”

Modifications for the E85 include fuel hoses, valves and gaskets designed for ethanol’s more corrosive properties; reinforced and redesigned injection valves; and on-board software calibrated for E85, which automatically senses the current blend in the tank and optimizes the combustion process accordingly.
