Volvo all-wheel-drive upgraded for 2006

Toronto, Ontario – Volvo’s all-wheel-drive system, available as standard or optional equipment on every Volvo vehicle, has undergone an upgrade for model year 2006 to further reduce the likelihood of wheel spin. The system now features Instant Traction, which provides enhanced traction on slippery surfaces.

Developed by the Swedish company Haldex, the system uses a non-return valve in the hydraulic control system to prevent the AWD system from being completely drained of hydraulic fluid and resulting pressure as the vehicle slows to a stop. When starting from standstill, 59 lb-ft of torque is pre-charged in the system. This engages the rear wheels much faster than previous systems, which required wheel spin of one-seventh of a turn of the front wheels before power was redistributed.
