Auburn Hills, Michigan – Three 2006 diesel-powered Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDIs will tackle the demanding climb to the 14,100-foot (4,297-metre) Pikes Peak summit in the 84th running of the Race to the Clouds on July 1, 2006.

The Race to the Clouds, also known as the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, is a 12.4-mile (19.9 km) course with 156 hairpin turns on terrain that alternates between pavement and gravel, mostly without guardrails. The Touaregs will compete in the Luxury SUV division, piloted by off-road champion and Dakar Rally driver Mark Miller, race car driver Danny Sullivan, and Baja and Dakar Rally driver Ryan Arciero.

The three Touaregs will be the first SUVs to use ultra-low sulphur diesel in the race, provided by sponsor Shell Oil Products.
