Volkswagen reveals photos, details of 2006 Passat
Wolfsburg, Germany – Volkswagen released photos and details about the new 2006 Passat on Tuesday. The car will be unveiled in February, 2005 and will go on sale in North America in the 4th quarter of 2005 as a 2006 model.
The new Passat features a transversely-mounted engine instead of a longitudinally-mounted powerplant, and slightly larger body dimensions. The new Passat is 4.77 metres long (+ 62 mm), 1.82 metres wide (+ 74 mm) and 1.47 metres tall (+ 10 mm). Its wheelbase measures 2.71 metres (+ 6 mm); the trunk has a maximum volume of 565 litres (+ 90 litres).
Static torsional rigidity has been improved by 57 percent.
In Europe, six of the seven available gasoline engines have direct injection and are new to the Passat. Three diesel TDI engines will also be offered. A six-speed automatic transmission, and a dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) will be available. Models with the 4Motion four-wheel drive system will follow later.
The new Passat will also feature a Bluetooth phone, high-quality sound system, sporty but comfortable long-distance seats, intelligent starting and locking system, electronic parking brake, automatic distance control, and a draft-free Climatronic ventilation system.
It will also offer an ESP + trailer stabilisation system, bi-xenon headlights with cornering light, and four-link rear suspension with acoustic dampening.
