Volkswagen Canada to open new parts distribution centre near Vancouver
Richmond, B.C. – Officials from Volkswagen Canada broke ground for a new parts distribution warehouse in Richmond, B.C. on Friday. The new distribution centre will open in the first quarter of 2003 and will serve 73 VW and Audi dealers in western Canada and the northwest United States.
“The Vancouver Parts Distribution Centre is an important component of our overall North American service and parts strategy,” said Eric Johnston, executive director, Service and Parts, Volkswagen Canada Inc. “We are pleased to be able to return to the Vancouver area since Volkswagen’s success has enabled us to do so.”
In the early 90’s, Volkswagen Canada had built a new parts warehouse in Coquitlam, B.C. but sold it to Sony a few years later because of declining VW sales.
The new parts distribution centre is located at 21720 Fraserwood Way, Richmond, British Columbia, approximately 15 kilometres (9 miles) south of Vancouver and 10 kilometres (6 miles) from Vancouver International Airport. Volkwagen’s warehouse is located near the regional offices and warehouses of Toyota, DaimlerChrysler and Nissan.
The building will be approximately 137,600 square feet, set on 7.15 acres overlooking the Fraser River. Over 12,000 square feet of the building is devoted to office space, including an employee training area. The centre will house 70,000 parts and accessories and eventually employ 25-30 professionals.
Initially, the distribution centre will service 31 Volkswagen dealers in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Following that phase, it will service 42 additional Volkswagen and Audi dealers in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Alaska.
The opening of the Vancouver facility is one of several new Volkswagen Parts Distribution Centres in North America, including ones in Ontario, California, Haslet, Texas, New Jersey and Mexico.
Volkswagen Canada Inc. is headquartered in Ajax, Ontario.
