Wolfsburg, Germany – Volkswagen has announced that it will build a new compact SUV, called the Tiguan, in 2008. The company has not yet announced the countries in which it will be sold.

The Tiguan, whose name was chosen by readers of the AutoBild group of magazines in Germany, will be produced in Wolfsburg. The name was chosen ahead of Nanuk, Namib, Rockton and Samun.

The Tiguan, which Volkswagen calls the “Touareg’s little brother”, is suited to urban environments as well as off-road driving. It will feature driving dynamics and high levels of comfort.

According to www.vwvortex.com, the name is a combination of the words ‘tiger’ and ‘iguana’ and must be pronounced ‘Tig-gwan.’
