Lack of definition of categories makes validity of awards suspect
Automotive data compilation and analysis firm Vincentric has announced their ‘Best Value In Canada’ awards for 2014 and there’s some very interesting entries on the list.
According to their data, which uses a combination of purchase price and 5 year ownership costs, Toyota comes out on top as best passenger vehicle brand. The luxury brand category award was given to Audi and Chevrolet picked up the best truck brand award.
Volkswagen, while not winning a brand category, did take home the greatest number of awards with 10 in total. Also, 16 of the awards were given to diesel and hybrid vehicles.
Of note is a seemingly undefined distinction between crossovers and SUVs, even though they are given separate categories. This is evident in two of the awards – Premium Compact Crossover for Buick Encore and Compact SUV for Chevrolet Trax. The Encore and Trax are essentially the same vehicle mechanically, yet they are able to play in both categories.
Another issue is the coupe category where an award was won by the Volkswagen Passat CC. While automakers have warped the meaning of the word ‘coupe’ to include four-door vehicles with raked rooflines, this doesn’t seem to be valid to the strict definition of the word.
Issues such as these really call into question the validity of certain awards, Vincentric’s ‘Best Value’ awards being one of them.
