IIHS’ Raul Arbelaez explains what goes into a side impact safety test and how the cars tested have improved.
IIHS has a very good video series on YouTube, and one of their latest clips shows what is commonly known as the side impact crash test. It measures vehicle intrusion and occupant safety when a deformable barrier strikes a vehicle broadside.
The test is supposed to simulate a small truck or SUV hitting a vehicle square on the side (as if the SUV ran a red light) to measure safety performance.
Raul does a great job summarizing the test, so I will let him explain in further detail.
