Vancouver and Beijing call on drivers to take a day off
Vancouver, British Columbia – Vancouver and Beijing, host cities of the next Olympic Winter and Summer Games, have joined with the United Nations Environment Program to ask car owners in the two cities to drive one day less in 2007 to mark yesterday’s World Environment Day.
In response to the call, 283 staff members of the Beijing Olympics’ Organizing Committee said they would keep their cars at home, and take the bus or ride a bicycle; another 78 said they would take the organization’s shuttle bus to work. The rest of the staff promised to drive one day less in the rest of the year.
The campaign follows a similar call on June 5, 2006, when drivers were asked to give up their cars for a day during the Sino-African Summit in Beijing.
