Washington, D.C. – A new six-passenger vehicle built specifically for wheelchair use and running on compressed natural gas (CNG) may become a reality through a US$50 million conditional loan offered by the U.S. Department of Energy.

The loan commitment will support the development of the MV-1. The vehicle is being developed by Vehicle Production Group (VPG), a new American car company based in Miami, Florida, and will be produced at the AM General Plant in Mishawaka, Indiana.

VPG estimates that at full capacity, the project will produce approximately 22,650 vehicles per year. The company said that it is the only purpose-built vehicle that was designed from the ground up for wheelchair accessibility.
