Transport Canada launches online tool to estimate emissions from transportation projects
Ottawa, Ontario – Transport Canada has launched a new online tool to help cities estimate the annual impact of greenhouse gases and other emissions from transportation-related projects, such as new transit or roads. The Urban Transportation Emissions Calculator allows urban transportation professionals to calculate both direct and indirect emissions from passenger, commercial and urban transit vehicles.
Direct emissions are those released directly from a vehicle’s tailpipe, while indirect emissions are created and released from the production, refining and transportation of fuels, or of electricity production for electric vehicles.
The calculator also allows municipalities to plan and report transport-related emissions in a more standardized manner, and considers the effect of new technologies and alternative fuels on greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants, based on existing technologies and available data. The calculator can be found at http://www.tc.gc.ca/UTEC.
