Woodstock, Ontario – Toyota will build an all-electric RAV4 at its plant in Woodstock, Ontario beginning in 2012. The new model is a joint venture of Toyota and Tesla, which will ship the powertrains from its facility in California.

The electric version will be built on the same line as the gasoline-powered RAV4, which the company said will streamline and simplify the production process and guarantee the highest level of quality control.

Toyota will pay Tesla approximately $100 million to supply the powertrains, including the battery, motor, gearbox and power electronics, which will be built at Tesla’s facility in Palo Alto.

The RAV4 EVs built in Canada will be sold in the U.S. The company said that a decision about sales in Canada has not yet been made.
