The function, which will be incorporated into dealer-installed optional navigation systems starting in June, gives onscreen and voice alerts to wrong-way drivers. Jointly developed with Aisin AW and Denso, the function monitors the vehicle’s directions on highways and selected toll roads, including at toll gates, ramps, turn-offs and junctions.
The function was made possible by advances in communications-based map updating technology and in pinpoint position-recognition technology that uses information from GPS, a gyro, vehicle speed and other sensors to determine accurate vehicle movement.
Approximately 1,000 wrong-way driving incidents are reported annually in Japan, with a high percentage involving senior drivers.
Toyota Canada said that there are currently no plans to bring the system to North America at present.
