TORRANCE, Calif. – Toyota yesterday released a sketch of an all-new U.S.-designed sedan, likely the next generation Avalon, that will debut at the 2012 New York International Auto Show.

The sketch shows only the rear third of the car, with a sloping roofline indicative of recent fastback sedan designs like the Mercedes-Benz CLS and Volkswagen CC. If not for the Toyota logo, you could be forgiven for confusing this with a Kia design because of its layered, creased, athletic lines. That’s a compliment, in case you weren’t sure.

If the final design is as sharp as this sketch, it might actually remind people that the Avalon is still on the market.

If you won’t make it to the New York Auto Show, Toyota will reveal the final sheet metal in a live-streaming video chat with the designers of the new sedan via Twitter and Facebook with the #ToyotaDesign hashtag. The Toyota Design Live chat is scheduled for 2 p.m. EDT on April 5, 2012 and hosted on
