Toronto, Ontario – Toyota will recall certain RAV4, Highlander and Highlander Hybrid models to replace the airbag sensor assembly.

The recall affects certain 2007-2008 RAV4 models and certain 2008 Highlander and Highlander Hybrids. Approximately 19,000 RAV4s and 6,000 Highlander models are covered by the campaign.

Two sensors in the curtain airbag sensor assembly are designed to detect vehicle roll angle. If one of these sensors malfunctions, the airbag warning light will illuminate and the roll detection system will be suspended, although the airbag will still be available in the event of a side collision. If both sensors fail nearly simultaneously after the initial airbag system check, the seatbelt pretensioner and the curtain airbag could activate.

No other Lexus or Toyota vehicles are involved in the recall, which applies only to vehicles sold in North America. Owners of the involved vehicles will receive a letter in May 2011. Toyota will replace the airbag sensor assembly with a new one at no cost.
