Detroit, Michigan – General Motors’ reported worldwide sales fell 10.8 per cent in 2008, bringing to an end its 77-year claim as the world’s largest automaker, according to a report by Automotive News.

The report said that with 8.97 million vehicles sold worldwide in 2008, Toyota Motor Corp. is now the largest, with GM trailing by 616,000 units at 8.36 million vehicles.

In 2008, both automakers posted sales declines.
