Toronto, Ontario – Toyota Canada has announced that it has found no risk of accelerator pedal entrapment when Canadian-designed all-weather floor mats are properly used in compatible Toyota and Lexus models, but the company said that although no vehicle defect has been identified, a safety improvement campaign has been initiated for Canadian customers.

Toyota said it has worked closely with Transport Canada during the investigation and that the Canadian-designed floor mats differ in design and material composition from Toyota-supplied mats in the U.S. Properly installed and secured compatible carpet floor mats also do not give rise to pedal entrapment.

As an extra measure of confidence, a safety improvement campaign will be initiated for Canadian customers. The campaign will provide a reconfiguration of the accelerator pedal for the seven affected models; reconfiguration of the shape of the floor surface to increase the space between the accelerator pedal and the floor for the Camry, Avalon and ES 350 models; and installation of a brake override system for the Camry, Avalon, ES 350, IS 350 and IS 250 models.

Unique to Toyota Canada, a safety campaign will also be initiated for Toyota Venza vehicles equipped with a genuine Toyota Canada driver’s side all-weather floor mat. Until owners of Venza vehicles receive their notices of the campaign, Toyota recommends that they take out any genuine Toyota driver’s side all-weather floor mat. The company has determined that the genuine Toyota carpeted floor mat is compatible with the vehicle, and recommends at this time that only the original equipment carpet floor mat be installed, using the retaining clips provided. Customers should also ensure that it is properly installed and secured, that it is not flipped over with the bottom side up, and that one floor mat is not stacked over another.

If a customer does not know or is not sure whether the driver’s side mat in the vehicle is correct or compatible, the customer should remove it.

For additional information about floor mats, customers can visit a Toyota dealership, or go online at Toyota Canada or Transport Canada. Toyota Canada will also provide an educational advisory to other Toyota and Lexus customers on proper mat installation and procedures.

The affected models are 2007-2010 Camry; 2005-2010 Avalon; 2004-2009 Prius; 2005-2010 Tacoma; 2007-2010 Tundra; 2007-2010 ES 350; 2006-2010 IS 250; and 2006-2010 IS 350.
