Toronto, Ontario – Toyota Canada will recall several Toyota and Lexus models to modify carpets near the accelerator pedals, and amend a previous recall for floor mats that may interfere with operation of the accelerator pedal.
A voluntary safety recall has been announced for approximately 850 Lexus GS300 and GS350 all-wheel drive vehicles, model year 2006 and early 2007 to modify the shape of the plastic pad embedded in the driver’s side floor carpet. Should the carpet around the accelerator pedal not be properly replaced in the correct position after a service operation, there is a possibility that the plastic pad may interfere with the operation of the accelerator pedal. If this occurs, the accelerator pedal may become temporarily stuck in a partially depressed position.
Another recall affects approximately 17,000 Lexus RX330, RX350 and RX400h vehicles, model year 2004 through 2006 and early 2007, and approximately 13,000 Toyota Highlander and Highlander HV vehicles, model year 2004 through 2006, to replace the driver’s side floor carpet cover. A forward retention clip is used to secure the driver’s side floor carpet cover, which is located in front of the centre console. If the clip is not installed properly, the cover may lean toward the accelerator pedal and interfere with the accelerator pedal arm, potentially causing the pedal to become stuck in a partially depressed position.
In conjunction with an amendment to the floor mat campaign by Toyota USA, Toyota Canada will amend its safety improvement and safety recall campaigns, initiated in the fall of 2009 to address the potential risk of an unsecured or incompatible floor mat interfering with the accelerator pedal. The campaign now includes 16,000 Toyota 4Runners, model years 2003 through 2009, and 99,300 Toyota Rav4 models, 2006 through 2010.
The company is also adding 850 Lexus LX570 vehicles, model year 2008 through 2011, to a late 2009 safety recall to replace the genuine Lexus accessory all-weather floor mat and perform the vehicle modifications. No other Toyota or Lexus vehicles are involved in this recall and Toyota is not aware of any incidents or injuries related to these conditions.
Owners involved in the campaigns will be notified by mail in the near future and provided with details regarding the campaign and condition affecting the vehicles. Newly-announced and amended recall remedies and vehicle improvements will be performed by Lexus and Toyota dealerships at no charge.
Toyota recommends that until owners of affected Lexus LX570 vehicles receive their campaign notices, they should remove any genuine Lexus accessory driver’s side all-weather floor mats.
