Toronto area officers conclude Spring Seatbelt campaign

Aurora, Ontario – The Greater Toronto Area’s 2005 Spring Seatbelt Campaign wrapped up earlier this week, with Ontario Provincial Police officers laying nearly 5,000 charges. One hundred were for child seat violations.

“I am pleased with the tremendous effort my officers put into this blitz (but) I am concerned that so many motorists still don’t get it,” said Superintendent Peter Burns, GTR Regional Commander. “I am especially trouble with the number of vulnerable children exposed to potentially life-threatening situations by their parents’ failure to comply with legislation.”

In Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) jurisdictions in 2004, one in four fatally-injured vehicle occupants were unrestrained in the vehicle. The OPP also reports that while a properly-used car seat reduces a risk of a child’s injury in a crash by as much as 75 per cent, as many as 80 per cent of child car seats are used incorrectly.
