San Carlos, California – Tesla Motors has announced it has commenced production of the 2008 Tesla Roadster electric sportscar, less than two years after it was first unveiled as a prototype on July 19, 2006.
The company said it has sold out of all 2008 model-year production and is currently taking reservations for model-year 2009 vehicles. To date, over 900 vehicles have been reserved. The company plans to produce a five-passenger sports sedan in 2010.
The Tesla is the only highway-capable production electric car of any kind for sale in the U.S. It has a zero-to-96 km/h acceleration of 3.9 seconds, a redline of 13,000 rpm and an EPA equivalent rating of 135US mpg (1.7 L/100 km).
