Ten vehicles make World Car of the Year finals
New York, New York – From an initial entry list of 27 new vehicles from around the world, a short list of ten finalists has been announced for the 2006 World Car of the Year award, which will be presented at the New York Auto Show on April 13, 2006.
The ten finalists are the BMW 3 Series, Honda Civic/Civic Hybrid, Land Rover Range Rover Sport, Lexus IS, Mazda MX-5, Mercedes-Benz M-Class, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Porsche Cayman S, Suzuki Swift and Volkswagen Passat. (The Mazda MX-5 is also referred to as the MX-5 Miata in North America; the Suzuki Swift is an overseas model and is not the same as the Swift+ subcompact sold in Canada.)
A jury of 46 international automotive journalists, constituting a balance of representation from Asia, Europe, North America and other parts of the world, selected the finalists by secret ballot. They will re-evaluate the Top Ten in preparation for a final round of voting in March. The top three finalists will be announced on April 1, 2006, with the winner named later in New York.
Three additional groups of finalists for World Performance Car, World Green Car and World Car Design of the Year will be announced by March 15; the winners of these specialty awards will also be announced at the New York event.
