St. John’s, Newfoundland – Targa Newfoundland has announced its 2012 dates, when competitors will race on the province’s road rally starting on September 9, 2012.
The annual event will kick off with registration and technical inspection on that day, followed by the traditional ceremonial start and prologue, and then by five days of competition. The event will wrap up on Friday, September 14 with the awards given out the next day.
The event format and route will be similar to past events, said Targa organizer Robert Giannou. Overnight stops will again include Gander, Clarenville and Marystown.
“Each year, we build on the success of the previous year and incorporate the lessons we learned along the way,” Giannou said. “Targa 2011 was the largest and most hotly-contested event in recent years, but also one of the most difficult for our organization. We’ve committed to make Targa 2012 better in every way.”
Giannou said he hopes to see more exotic cars coming from across the continent, spurred on by the new Fast Tour held during the 2011 event. However, he warned not to expect a repeat of the 2011 edition, when a Ferrari Enzo from Calgary participating in the 2011 Fast Tour portion of the event ended up in the river in Marystown.
Targa Newfoundland will again support its official charitable partner, the Autism Society of Newfoundland and Labrador.
