St. John’s, Newfoundland – The Targa Newfoundland road rally has wrapped up, with 47 competitors making it to the finish line in front of hundreds of fans last Friday. The six-day event covered 2,200 kilometres and included competitors who were also driving on behalf of charity.

The Soldier On team of war veterans Master Corporal Jody Mitic and Corporal Andrew Knisley, sponsored by Acura, had raised $90,000 for wounded soldiers and their families, while Hammerhead Racing Group, with two Mazda Miata entries, raised over $31,000 for young people with cancer, with a portion of the proceeds going to the local Young Adult Cancer Canada group. The Kia dealers of Canada teamed up with Team Wishful Thinking, led by Adam Hill and Mark Kostick, presenting a cheque for $100,000 for the Children’s Wish Foundation.

The awards dinner, held on Saturday night, saw all proceeds going to the Autism Society of Newfoundland & Labrador, the charitable partner of Targa Newfoundland.

The race category winners were:

Classic – Scott Giannou and Ray Felice, 1981 Porsche 911

Modern – Matt Oldford and Brian Oldford, 2004 Subaru WRX STi

Open – Jim Kenzie and Brian Bourbonniere, 2009 Mini Cooper S JCW

Grand Touring – Alan Townsley and David Fuhrmann, 2003 Acura RSX
