Monterey, California – Subaru Canada Inc. has introduced the all-new 2008 Impreza WRX STI. The ultimate performance Subaru is powered by a 305-horsepower Subaru Boxer engine and features a new level of driver-selectable powertrain and dynamic handling control. The 2008 WRX STI is built exclusively as a four-door hatchback model, with a design strongly influenced by the brand’s competition heritage.
Now in its third generation, the 2008 WRX STI uses a revised 2.5-litre turbocharged and intercooled engine, now with Dual Active Valve Control system, producing 305 hp at 6,000 rpm, a gain of 12 hp over the previous model. The 290 lb-ft of torque is unchanged but arrives at 4,000 rpm, which is 400 rpm earlier, for better response. The more powerful engine also achieves the stringent Bin 5 Tier 2 and LEV2-California Tier 2/Bin 5 emissions certifications.
The Driver Controlled Centre Differential (DCCD) version of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, which remains exclusive to the WRX STI, now offers three selectable automatic performance modes, in addition to the six manual differential-locking settings. For the first time, the DCCD AWD integrates the Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) stability and traction control system, also with three driver-selectable positions. Standard 18-inch BBS forged aluminum-alloy wheels are clad in Dunlop SP600 245/40R18 tires.
Other features include a new double-wishbone suspension, replacing the previous inverted-strut rear suspension, a wider track, stiffer platform and an engine placed slightly lower in the chassis for a lower centre of gravity.
The new WRX STI is expected to go on sale in December, with pricing announced closer to the vehicle’s sale date.
