Subaru driver McGeer wins Rallye de Quebec
Canadian Rally Champion Tom McGeer began his quest for a sixth Canadian rally driving title with his 16th career victory at the Rallye de Québec. McGeer won seven of eight stages on Saturday and three of six on Sunday to finish the opening round of the 2002 Subaru Canadian Rally Championship, presented by Yokohama, ahead of runner-up Sylvain Erickson in a Mitsubishi. Mitsubishi’s Jean-Sebastien Besner, was third.
“The roads were tight and twisty, the way I like them, and the conditions were fabulous,” said McGeer. “We pushed hard Saturday to pull out the gap we needed which made the finish much easier.”
New restrictions on turbochargers, intended to make the cars more equal, have cut his Subaru’s power output by about 25 per cent. McGeer did not think the power loss was critical in the snow and ice conditions, but predicted close contests later in the year.
Subaru’s Patrick Richard, of Whistler, B.C., was McGeer’s main early challenger, but Richard lost time when he slid into a snow bank on one of Saturday’s late stages, eventually taking fourth overall, third in the Group N class.
The Subaru Canadian Rally Championship, presented by Yokohama, consists of eight annual events across the country. The next event is the Rallye Perce-Neige, February 22 – 24. For more on the Subaru Canada Rally Team, visit their web site at
