Stuttgart, Germany – Smart has unveiled the next generation of its Fortwo coupe and cabriolet which provide more comfort and a new gasoline engine.
Presented to 550 international journalists on the roof of a mid-city car park in Germany, the new models will not only be available in Canada, but will also be the first Smart models sold to the public in the U.S. when they go on sale in 2008.
The new three-cylinder gasoline engine has a one-litre capacity; models shown come in ratings of 61, 71 or 84 hp, and now have a maximum speed of 145 km/h, or 10 km/h more than the European models they replace. The diesel-powered Smart also receives a ten per cent power upgrade, to 45 hp, but retains a European fuel economy rating of less than 3.5 L/100 km. All engines use a re-engineered automated manual five-speed transmission.
The new Smart meets all American crash regulations, and new head/thorax side airbags are available as optional equipment.
