Segway recalls 23,500 Personal Transporters
Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Segway Inc., has announced a voluntary recall of about 23,500 of the company’s two-wheeled personal transporters. The affected transporters can unexpectedly change direction of the wheels; there have been six reports of injuries.
The Commission reports that the vehicles can unexpectedly apply reverse torque to the wheels when the device is tilted back by the Speed Limiter, and the rider comes off and then back onto the device within a short period of time. The recall affects Segway PT i167, i170, i180, p133, XT, GT and i2 models. Owners should contact the company at 1-800-750-6557 or www.segway.com to receive a free software upgrade.
