Richmond Hill, Ontario – New-vehicle sales rose 14.1 per cent in Canada in March, reaching 145,428 units, according to industry analyst Dennis DesRosiers.

“We are still below the more normal 150,000 units Canadians typically buy in March, but still very healthy,” DesRosiers said. “This puts year-to-date sales up 15.0 per cent and sets Canada on track for a 1.55 to 1.6 million sales year. Still early to go with the higher number, but 1.55 million would be considered a fabulous recovery from the last two years. It is also significant in that March is the first ‘big’ month for sales. January and February were positive, but not a lot of vehicles are bought early in the year. For 2010 to be a full recovery, we had to start with March, and hopefully continue through the rest of the year.”

DesRosiers noted that most companies had major increases, but “the one critical exception was General Motors, where sales were down a shocking 22.1 per cent,” he said. “This puts GM’s market share year-to-date at an all-time record low, at least for the modern history of the automotive sector, of only 14.7 per cent to the end of March. You would have to go back to the period between 1915 and 1919 to find GM’s market share below 15 per cent.”
