Saint John, New Brunswick – Saint John has become the first municipality in Canada to mark an emergency evacuation route with signs. The program was launched by the city and the Saint John Police Force.
Citizens are urged to “Follow the E” in an emergency. The new blue and white triangular signs feature a large E and directional arrow to signal the appropriate evacuation route. When an evacuation is required, the police will direct citizens along the appropriate route, either to another part of the city or out of it as necessary.
The sign program is the first of its kind in Canada. While some areas have tsunami or storm surge warning signs, this is the first program to feature an all-hazards evacuation scenario. The city is in the process of erecting signs around the city.
“We live in a city that prizes the economic drive of industry, but we need to co-exist safely with the risks involved,” said Mayor Ivan Court. “An evacuation plan ensures we are prepared to take care of our citizens during an emergency.”
