Detroit, Michigan – General Motors has unveiled the all-new 2009 Pontiac Vibe, which will be available in AWD and GT models, with more powerful 1.8- and 2.4-litre engines. The new models will be built in Fremont, California and go on sale in early 2008.
“With the 2009 Vibe, we knew we wanted to take everything we liked about the original and push it to the next level – more power, more style, more versatility,” said Craig Bierley, Pontiac marketing director. “It has the interior room and cargo capacity expected of a larger SUV, but with the precise handling characteristics you would expect from any Pontiac.”
Features on the Vibe will include a more powerful 1.8-litre base engine producing 132 hp; new high-output 2.4-litre engine producing 158 hp; all-new sheet metal and lighting elements; refreshed interior; standard electronic vehicle stability control and tire pressure monitoring system; six standard airbags; and integrated cargo management system and fold-flat front seat.
All-wheel drive models will come standard with a four-speed automatic transmission, while 2.4-litre or GT models will feature a standard five-speed manual transmission or new, five-speed electronically-controlled automatic transmission with manual shift mode. Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS will be standard on all models.
Introduced in 2002 as a 2003 model, the Pontiac Vibe sold over 39,000 units in its first year; total sales by the end of calendar year 2007 will number approximately 300,000 vehicles.
