Opel Plant in Germany to halt production during Bush visit
Berlin, Germany – General Motors Corporation’s German unit said it will halt production at its biggest plant during U.S. President George W. Bush’s visit to Germany this week, due to expected transport disruptions.
Major highways will be closed and rail services interrupted during Bush’s Wednesday visit to the cities of Mainz and Wiesbaden, west of Frankfurt. As a result, Adam Opel AG told 5,000 workers scheduled to work two shifts at its Ruesselsheim plant to stay home. “In view of the expected transport disruption, neither workers’ punctual appearance at work nor the timely delivery of materials are assured,” said Opel spokeswoman Gudrun Langer. The lost production will be made up over the next two Saturdays.
