Toronto, Ontario – Several drivers in Ontario have been caught in an insurance scam, according to the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario, which is warning people to beware of false newspaper advertisements.
The ads were placed in several Ontario city newspapers, most recently in London, Ottawa and Toronto, advertising auto insurance. The perpetrators of the scheme appear to place the ads for about a week and then move to another city and newspaper.
The ads use the name Security Insurance Inc. and offer a one-year insurance package for those with bad driving records. The phone number given is 1-800-508-6630, with an address at 355 Adelaide Street in Thunder Bay.
Victims are directed to send money by a Western Union Money Gram for their coverage but receive no policy.
Anyone who may have been caught by the scam is asked to call the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario at 416-365-1900 or 1-800-265-3097.
