Toronto, Ontario – The Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council (OMVIC) is advising consumers of a dealership that is continuing to sell vehicles although its registration has been revoked.

Fleetwood Auto and its owner John Byers are not registered in Ontario to sell vehicles, the council said. The dealership’s registration was revoked in January 2009, but it appears the owner is continuing to sell vehicles under the name Asset Distribution and Repo Centre at 4712 Dunlop Street West in Barrie.

The registration was revoked as a result of consumer complaints, numerous Highway Traffic Act convictions, and indebtedness to the Ministry of Revenue and the Motor Vehicle Dealers Compensation Fund. The dealer appealed to Divisional Court but the appeal was dismissed.

All motor vehicle dealers and salespeople must be registered with OMVIC before buying, selling or leasing vehicles in Ontario. Consumers who purchase vehicles through unregistered dealers are not protected by provincial legislation, including the right to make claims to the Motor Vehicle Dealers Compensation Fund. Dealers who knowingly trade with an unregistered dealer are subject to sanctions under the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act and Code of Ethics.

Consumers can verify registration of dealers and salespeople by visiting OMVIC.
