Milton, Ontario – Meritor Suspension Systems Company has announced it will close its coil spring operations in Milton, Ontario, putting 165 employees out of work.
The company is a joint venture of ArvinMeritor Inc. and Mitsubishi Steel Manufacturing. Earlier this week, ArvinMeritor announced the closure of its truck brake parts plant in Tilbury, Ontario.
“We are experiencing unprecedented economic pressure within the global automotive industry,” said Gerald Anderson, president and general manager of Meritor. “This closure reflects actions we are taking to reduce fixed costs in response to significantly lower vehicle production volumes.”
The company said it is currently evaluating transferring the business to its other facilities in North America. The phased closure is expected to be completed by the end of 2009.
