Mitsubishi also releases details on new Outlander PHEV.
The New York Auto Show has shed some light on what Mitsubishi plans to do in order to stay relevant in North America. While neither of these items are surprises, Mitsubishi has given us some details on two new products.
The Japanese automaker is in dire need of an A-segment car. The new Mirage, shown at other shows but officially named in New York, will slot below all of Mitsubishi’s other offerings. While no engine details have been announced, the new Mirage is expected to get 5.9L/100km on the US combined cycle and 5.4L/100km highway from a 1.2L inline 3-cylinder engine and CVT transmission. Fuel economy numbers will more than likely change for Canadian consumption.
Mitsubishi announced in January the new subcompact will be available in Canada this fall.
The company also shed some light on the new Outlander PHEV. The CUV will be equipped with a lithium ion battery pack providing juice to two 60 kW motors driving all four wheels. A “highly fuel-efficient gasoline-powered engine” will also be under the hood but no further details were given.

In addition to its exceptional fuel economy, the all-new 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage will be offered exclusively in a convenient 5-door configuration with room for five passengers.

Expected to be one of the most fuel-efficient CUVs with standard 7-passenger seating in the North American marketplace with a manufacturer-estimated 31 mpg highway (ES and SE FWD models; pending EPA fuel mileage rating), the well-equipped entry-level 2014 Outlander ES has a starting net MSRP* of only $22,995.
The mid-grade 2014 Outlander SE will have a starting net MSRP* of only $23,795 – priced $200less than the outgoing previous-generation comparable model. Expected to land in Mitsubishi Motors showrooms in 2014, the new Outlander PHEV is powered by a unique hybrid drivetrain that combines the innovative 100% electric-powered componentry including a pair of reliable 60 kW (80-bhp) electric motors that have been reconfigured for the Outlander application as well as a proven lithium-ion drive battery pack along with a highly fuel-efficient gasoline-powered engine.
