V6 plug-in gasoline hybrid and W12 engine will also be available
While the next-generation Volkswagen Phaeton has already been confirmed to return to the United States (and possibly Canada as well), it seems the folks at Volkswagen are almost done development of the new model, even though it won’t return until the 2018 or 2019 model year.
According to Automotive News, the next-generation Volkswagen Phaeton will have a starting price of around $70,000 USD when it does on sale in about 3 or 4 years time. It will be underpinned by the same Audi-developed MLB Evo platform as the next-generation Audi sedans as well as the Q7 and VW Touareg crossovers.
Under the hood will be a selection of powertrains, including a V6-based plug-in gasoline hybrid and a V8 turbodiesel. Those in European locales will likely be able to tick off an available W12 engine as a top-line option.
