Next-generation Prius may arrive by 2008, report says

London, England – A report by the Green Car Congress speculates that Toyota may have a next-generation Prius as early as 2008, with a fuel economy target of 2.5 L/100 km (112 mpg Imp). The new model may have a redesigned electrical system and a lithium-ion battery system, as opposed to the NiMH pack used in the current model. Part of the impetus is to position the Prius to compete more effectively against fuel-efficient diesels that now dominate the European market.
