Newfoundland and Labrador to invest in intelligent transportation systems
Ottawa, Ontario – A contribution has been signed between the Government of Canada and the province of Newfoundland and Labrador to invest $1.1 million in intelligent transportation systems. The money, which will be contributed equally between the federal and provincial levels of government, will be used for the acquisition and installation of up to 18 road weather information systems along the province’s National Highway System. The project work is expected to be completed by March 31, 2006.
The systems are automated weather reporting stations with special sensors embedded in and below the road, and on nearby towers. The systems collect detailed data, which helps weather forecasters predict icing conditions and assists road crews in making winter highway maintenance decisions.
