Mercedes fused established vehicle categories, such as sport sedan and SUV, to create a new vehicle concept it calls the Grand Sports Tourer, which it says is “all about the three Ds: Dimensions, Design and Dynamism”. Its target audience is consumers who want a car with versatility combined with performance. Measuring 5,157 mm in length, it is close in size to a luxury sedan but is more spacious inside.
The R Class will be available to North American buyers in fall of 2005, and will go on sale in Europe at the beginning of 2006.
