Aiming for improved efficiency, the new diesel is expected to achieve 5.1L/100km highway.
Volkswagen has developed a new diesel engine that will generate more power while increasing efficiency, Edmunds has learned. It will be equipped in 2015 model year Golf, Beetle, Passat and Jetta models and Audi clean diesel vehicles.
The current engine, which is rated at 5.6L/100km in the Jetta by the EPA, produces 140 hp. The new EA288 engine is expected to bump that up to 150 hp and also save a half litre of fuel per 100km.
Released earlier this year, the Chevrolet Cruze Diesel also scores 5.1L/100km on the EPA 5-cycle test.
