Göteborg, Sweden – Volvo has announced three new Volvo Ocean Race Edition models of its V70, XC70 and XC90 to commemorate the 2008-2009 running of the famous yacht race. For the first time, buyers will be able to choose the special-edition models in a choice of two colours, Ocean Blue and Electric Silver.
“The Volvo Ocean Race reflects the values that our customers look for when they choose a car,” said Lennart Stegland, president of the Special Vehicles division at Volvo Cars. “It’s all about an active lifestyle, adventure and passion. The cars in the Volvo Ocean Race Edition radiate all this. We are convinced that the marine design connection will make them very attractive.”
When Volvo organized the first Ocean Race in 2001-2002, the company sold 4,500 special-edition V70 and X70 vehicles; in conjunction with the 2005-2006 race, it added the XC90 and sold 8,600 cars. The new edition will reach dealers in June 2008 and is expected to sell about 9,000 vehicles. The five largest markets are Germany, Sweden, Finland, Great Britain and Japan.
“This time we’ve sharpened our offer with a stronger link to sailing,” Stegland said. “More interior details echoes the materials used in masts and rigs. The stitching on the upholstery traces its roots to sail making. The aluminum detailing on the mats resembles clews. What is more, the design of the unique wheels has been inspired by the movement of the ocean’s waves.”
The Volvo Ocean Race will begin on October 4 in Spain and will stop in South Africa, India, Singapore, China, Brazil, the U.S., Ireland and Sweden before finishing in St. Petersburg, Russia on June 27, 2009. For more information, visit VolvoOceanRace.org.
