Whitby, Ontario – BMW will release two new Z4 models in the spring of 2009, offering enhanced performance, efficiency, and exterior and interior refinement.
The new Z4 roadsters will feature a two-piece retractable hardtop, made of lightweight aluminum, which opens and closes automatically in 20 seconds. The lined roof includes large windows and a heated rear window for optimized visibility.
The new models will be the Z4 sDrive35i, with 3.0-litre twin turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, and Z4 sDrive30i, with 3.0-litre naturally aspirated inline six-cylinder engine. Both engines are also used in the 1, 3 and 5 Series. The sDrive35i produces 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque, while the sDrive30i produces 255 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque. Both will come with a standard six-speed manual transmission; the sDrive35i will offer an optional seven-speed Double Clutch Transmission, while the sDrive30i will have an available six-speed sport automatic.
The new models will also be the first use of the iDrive control system in the company’s roadster and will include a folding 8.8-inch display screen with high-resolution graphics and optimized menu structure. Other features include head/thorax airbags, seatbelts with new tightening technology, reinforced A-pillars and roll bars behind the head restraints, tire pressure warning system, and adaptive bi-xenon headlamps.
